Known issue: LG bottom-freezer ice sheet on the freezer floor (frozen defrost drain)
LG's own help library describes this pattern on its refrigerators: meltwater from the defrost cycle cannot reach the drain pan because the freezer drain is blocked by ice or debris, so it runs back and freezes on the bottom of the freezer. LG's first step is a full manual defrost; if the ice returns, LG says a technician should clear the drain, which requires disassembly. Repair sites and forums report it repeatedly on LG bottom-freezer and French-door models.
Before you start
- Unplug the refrigerator before removing the freezer rear panel.
- Do not use sharp tools or an ice pick near the evaporator; a punctured coil is a sealed-system repair for an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Use warm, not boiling, water near plastic liners.
