Known issue: GE French-door freezer drawer handle comes off (2022 recall)
In April 2022 GE Appliances recalled about 155,000 GE-brand 36-inch French-door bottom-freezer refrigerators in fingerprint-resistant stainless, built February 2020 to August 2021 (models GFE26JYMKFFS, GFE26JYMNFFS, GNE27EYMKFFS, GNE27EYMNFFS, GNE27JYMKFFS, GNE27JYMNFFS, with listed serial prefixes). The freezer drawer handle can detach while opening, a fall hazard: 71 reports and 37 injuries. The remedy is a free in-home visit to replace the handle mounting fasteners and reinstall the handle.
Before you start
- Until repaired, open the freezer by gripping the edge of the drawer, not the handle, as the recall advises.
- Warn elderly customers specifically; most injuries were falls when the handle let go.
