Field pattern: washer 'won't spin' that is really a drain problem

Most washers will not go into high-speed spin until the water level drops, and on older top-loaders the pump runs whenever the tub spins. A clogged pump or hose, a kinked drain hose or an object between the tubs makes a 'no spin' complaint. Techs check drain first; ordering a motor, shifter or clutch for a drain problem is the wrong turn.
