Field pattern: pro-style rangetop won't spark or light after a cleaning or boil-over (dry it, clear residue, check ground before the spark module)
Moisture and cleaner residue around the electrodes and switches are the usual causes, followed by a cracked electrode, a wire pushed off during cleaning, and a lost ground or reversed polarity. The common wrong turn is ordering a spark module first; on a single dead burner, the module is rarely the cause because it feeds all electrodes.
Before you start
- Unplug or switch off the breaker before reaching under the top or touching electrode wires
- Spark modules put out high voltage: do not touch electrodes or leads while sparking
- Gas valves, orifices and gas lines are not part of this guide; refer gas-side issues to a licensed gas technician
- If you smell gas, shut everything off, ventilate, no switches
