Field pattern: trash compactor 'dead, needs a motor' (key knob, drawer switch and thermal cutout first)

Compactors are interlocked: the key knob must be fully in START (or the unit switched ON), the drawer fully closed so the drawer switch closes, and a hot motor must cool. A drawer open as little as about 1/4 in stops it. Test the key/on-off switch and drawer switch for continuity before buying a motor.

Cross-checked ~40 min easyBrands: Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Broan, Kenmore

Before you start

  • Unplug before removing the top panel or testing switches
  • Never defeat the drawer switch with the drawer open
