Two cheap causes account for most of these calls: restricted airflow that trips the high limit, and a coated or misplaced flame sensor that stops proving flame. The common wrong turn is reading 'ignition failure' or 'limit' on the LED, blaming the board and replacing it, while the filter, the sensor rod or the burner ground was the real problem.

Furnace boards show the current state on an LED or a 7-segment display, and many also keep a fault history. Some keep it only until power is removed; one Carrier-family description says stored codes clear on power loss or about 48 hours after the fault. Others have a fault-recall push button or recall terminal that replays recent faults. Read the LED through the door sight glass first; removing the blower door usually opens the door switch and drops power to the board.

Measure the actual flame current in series with a µA DC meter before and after cleaning. A clean sensor with a low reading points to ground, wiring, board or burner flame problems rather than the rod itself.
