Installing a factory ice maker kit in an 'ice maker ready' refrigerator (top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side)

Many lower-priced refrigerators ship with the wiring, fill-tube opening and valve mounting holes in place but no ice maker or water valve. The brand sells a matching kit (ice maker, inlet valve, tubing, clips, sometimes a bin and cover). The job is: unplug, open the freezer-wall wiring/fill-tube cover, mount the ice maker on the provided screws or bracket and plug it into the harness, mount the water valve on the back of the cabinet in the pre-made holes, connect the valve-to-fill-tube tubing, then run a house water line to the valve with a service loop. Use the kit made for that brand and cabinet size; kits are not universal.

Known issue: Whirlpool-built side-by-side (2018-2021) dispenser or ice maker dead from broken freezer-door wires

A class action (Costa v. Whirlpool, D. Del.) alleged that wire harnesses running through the freezer door hinge area of side-by-side refrigerators made 2018 to 2021 under the Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir brands break from normal door use, killing the dispenser, ice maker or controls, and that the fix often means a whole freezer door. The court granted preliminary approval of a settlement in March 2026; class counsel later reported final approval. Whirlpool denies the claims. Reported benefits include reimbursement, free repair or partial cash, with a past-failure claim deadline of November 2, 2026.

Field pattern: new ice maker, still no ice (water supply, valve and fill tube first)

Most no-ice calls are water problems, not ice-maker problems. Techs check freezer temperature, supply pressure and the filter, then the inlet valve and a frozen fill tube, and only then the ice maker. Replacing the ice maker first is the expensive wrong turn, and a fill tube thawed without fixing why it froze comes back.
