Best-selling US heat pump water heater. A compressor on top pulls heat from room air into the tank; 4500 W resistive elements back it up in High Demand and Electric modes. Built-in EcoNet Wi-Fi and a CTA-2045 demand-response port. The refrigerant circuit is sealed: diagnose only.

Safety first

240 V: lock out and verify 0 V before opening.
Sealed refrigerant system is blocked: no recharge, brazing or compressor work; refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
Never run elements on a dry tank.

How it works

In Energy Saver / Heat Pump modes the compressor and fan run and the tank is heated by the condenser wrapped on the tank; elements only assist in High Demand or run alone in Electric mode.

Ambient air must be between 37 °F and 145 °F for heat pump operation; outside that range the control uses the elements.

A washable air filter on top protects the evaporator coil; condensate drains through a 3/4 in connection.

Vacation mode holds a low setpoint for 2-28 days or indefinitely.

Rheem Performance Platinum electric tanks sold at big-box stores with model numbers starting XE (e.g. XE50T12ST45U1 with 4500/4500 W elements, XE50T12EC55U1 with 5500/5500 W elements and LCD touch control, XE50T12CS45U0 / CS55U1 'Gladiator' trim with LeakGuard and built-in EcoNet). The '12' in the model is the 12-year warranty tier. Exact production years not confirmed; date the unit from its rating plate.
