A.O. Smith Voltex / ProLine XE Voltex hybrid heat pump water heater: quick sheet
Covers: A.O. Smith Voltex hybrid heat pump water heaters: older HPTU-50N/66N/80N, current ProLine XE Voltex HPTU-50CTA, FPTU-80, and Voltex AL Smart HPTS (anti-leak). Model letters vary by channel; confirm on the rating plate.
A.O. Smith's pro-channel heat pump water heater. Compressor and fan on top, two 4500 W backup elements, three operating modes (Efficiency, Hybrid, Electric). AL Smart versions add a smart anode, leak sensors and support for an automatic shut-off valve.
Safety first
- 240 V: lock out and verify 0 V.
- Sealed refrigerant system is blocked.
- Do not dry-fire elements.
How it works
Efficiency mode uses only the heat pump; Hybrid mode uses the heat pump with elements helping during heavy demand; Electric mode uses only the elements.
Elements are wired so that the maximum draw is 4500 W at 208-240 V (HPTU-50CTA: 23.6 A).
The heat pump needs enough room air; A.O. Smith publishes a clearance addendum and space-requirement map, and a duct kit or booster fan for tight spaces.
A digital display shows fault codes; the product page lists families such as E10-E60, ECC, ECL, EdH, Edr, ELC, EoF, EUC, HP0, ICE and PS (meanings in the manual).
