Covers: ZLINE 24-48 in convertible-vent wall-mount chimney hoods with the internal 400 CFM 4-speed motor: KB-24 / KB-30 / KB-36 (and KB-304 outdoor-approved), KB2 designer finishes, KL2 and KL3 (crown molding / glass-canopy styles). Not the remote/in-line blower or Professional under-cabinet 1200 CFM lines. Units made before and after Sept/Oct 2025 have separate manuals; get the serial from the label behind the baffle filters.

Popular online-sold pro-style hoods: stainless chimney, dishwasher-safe baffle filters, push-button control with LCD speed/timer readout and LED lights. One internal blower rated 400 CFM on high with a 6 in round outlet. ZLINE warranty is 3 years parts only with a lifetime motor warranty, so labor is on the customer; most calls are duct, damper and power issues rather than a dead motor.

Safety first

Unplug the hood or turn off its dedicated circuit before removing filters, chimney or covers.
Live-voltage tests are caution: insulated probes, one hand.
Have a second person support heavy chimney hoods during removal.

How it works

A 120 V cord-and-plug supply (NEMA 5-15) on a dedicated 15 A circuit feeds a control board. Push buttons select four fan speeds (about 120 / 240 / 320 / 400 CFM on the KB-30), the lights and a delayed shutoff timer.

The blower discharges through a transition piece and backdraft damper to 6 in round duct. Like any hood, real airflow depends on duct size, length, elbows and the exterior cap; a reducer to 4 in will cripple it.

Convertible: for recirculating installs ZLINE sells charcoal filters (model CF1 for KB) and the air returns to the kitchen through the chimney vents. Charcoal filters are not washable.

Baffle filters let grease drain toward the edges; when they are loaded, airflow and capture fall off before the motor shows any fault.

Range hood fan runs only on high, runs slow, or a speed is missing

On simple switch hoods, a missing speed is usually the switch or a failed winding tap; on board-controlled hoods it can be a relay on the control. A fan that is slow on every speed points to grease-dragged bearings, a weak run capacitor on PSC motors, or airflow restriction. Check mechanical drag and airflow before electrical parts.

Cold air, odors or insects coming in through the range hood when it's off

Two dampers should block the duct when the fan is off: one at the hood and one in the wall or roof cap. Grease, bends, missing springs or screws in the path keep them open. Long duct runs and a house under negative pressure make it worse. Fix the dampers first; make-up air questions go to code and an HVAC or licensed contractor.

Loaded grease filters cut airflow and can make the motor overheat. Identify the filter type, clean stainless baffles and mesh with hot water and a degreasing soak or the dishwasher where the maker allows it, never put charcoal filters in water, and reset the hood's filter reminder.
