Kinetico non-electric twin-tank softeners (Premier Series, Premier XP, Signature Series): quick sheet
Covers: Kinetico water-powered twin-tank softeners: Premier Series softeners and the 4040s/4060s Overdrive combination units (carbon, Chloraban or Macrolite RX); older 2030s/2060s-era units follow the same non-electric principle but were not researched here, Premier XP (S150, S250, S250 OD, S350, S550, S650, S650 OD, Q850 XP and Q850 OD XP), and Signature Series 735 and 935. Sold and serviced through authorized local Kinetico dealers. Model and meter disc number are on the dealer's data sheet/owner's manual record page; the control valve with the regeneration indicator dot sits on top of the two resin tanks. Search terms: Kinetico not soft, Kinetico manual regeneration screwdriver, Kinetico running constantly, Kinetico brine tank full of water, Kinetico bypass yellow green red.
Kinetico softeners have no plug, no timer and no circuit board. A built-in water meter, driven by the flow of water through the valve, counts usage and kicks off regeneration on demand, at any time of day. Two resin tanks take turns, so one is always delivering soft water while the other regenerates, and the regeneration (counter-current) is done with soft water. Overdrive (OD) models send service water through both tanks at once for higher flow and switch to one tank only while the other regenerates. Field work is mostly checks and a manual regeneration; internal valve repair and meter disc changes are normally done by the dealer, who also sets the meter disc for the household's hardness.
Safety first
- Relieve pressure with the filter's relief valve and bypass first before opening a filter sump.
- Use only silicone lubricant on O-rings; petroleum products swell them and may void the warranty.
- Do not use the softener on microbiologically unsafe water; bypass it during boil-water alerts.
- Sodium is added to softened water; owners on low-sodium diets may want a separate drinking-water tap.
How it works
Water flowing to the house turns a meter inside the control valve. A meter disc chosen by the dealer for the water hardness sets how many gallons pass before regeneration starts.
When the count is reached, the valve switches service to the other tank and starts regenerating the exhausted one: brine is drawn from the salt tank through the resin, then rinse, and brine refill with soft water.
Kinetico describes its process as counter-current regeneration (regeneration flow opposite to service flow), which it says uses less salt and water than a conventional 4- or 5-cycle timer softener.
Because it runs on demand, a busy household may regenerate several times a day and a vacant one may go days without regenerating. Running toilets and drips also trigger more frequent regenerations.
