Fleck 7000SXT high-flow softener valve (1" and 1-1/4"): quick sheet

Covers: Fleck 7000SXT electronic control on the 7000 high-flow piston valve, used on larger single-tank downflow softeners (often 48,000-80,000 grain and up) and backwashing filters sold by many dealer and online brands; plumbed with 1" or 1-1/4" bypass adapters. Identified by the Fleck label and the SXT face (Extra Cycle, Up, Down) on a wider valve body with the injector on top under a clip-held cap. Search terms: Fleck 7000, 7000SXT, 7000 SXT softener, 7000SXT programming, dF2b, FM t1.2. For the smaller 5600SXT see its own sheet; older mechanical 7000 SE timers share the valve but not the electronics.

The 7000 is Fleck's 1-1/4"-class residential/light-commercial valve: a single piston sliding through a seal and spacer stack, driven by a motor with optical position sensing, controlled by the same SXT timer family as the 5600SXT. It is chosen for high flow and stronger backwash on bigger tanks. Most calls are programming (valve type, capacity, brine fill), a fouled injector or brine refill control, drain line sizing, a stuck meter, or a worn piston/seal stack.

Safety first

  • Bypass and depressurize before opening any port; the tank holds line pressure
  • The transformer plugs into 120 V: unplug before working on the board or motor
  • A 1-1/4" valve backwashes at high flow: secure the drain line and size it per the drain-line rule
  • Keep an air gap at the drain and never submerge the drain line end
  • Bond across the plastic bypass if it breaks a metal cold-water ground path
  • Use only potable-water-rated lubricants; petroleum grease swells seals

How it works

In service, water goes down through the resin and up the 1-1/4" distributor to the outlet, turning a turbine meter. The SXT board counts gallons; in meter-delayed mode (normal for softeners) it regenerates at the set time once remaining capacity falls into reserve, in meter-immediate mode it starts at once, and time-clock or day-of-week modes ignore the meter. Day override forces a regeneration after a set number of days either way.

The softener default valve type is dF2b (downflow, double backwash). The cycle runs B1 first backwash, BD brine draw/slow rinse, B2 second backwash, RR rapid rinse and BF brine fill, each programmable 0-199 minutes. A step set to 0 is skipped; setting a step to OFF ends the sequence there, so dealers avoid OFF. dF1b is the single-backwash setting. Brine fill is last, so the salt tank refills at the end of each regeneration.

Brine draw is made by an injector on top of the valve; refill flow is limited by the brine line flow control and backwash flow by the drain line flow control, both sized to the tank. A 1-1/4" turbine meter is programmed as FM t1.2. If power fails during regeneration, the control remembers the step and resumes when power returns; the clock is held about 48 hours and programming is kept in non-volatile memory.

Dealer programming differs widely by tank: one dealer twin-tank 7000SXT manual ships B1 10 min, BD 60, B2 0, RR 10 and BF 20-26 min depending on model, while a dealer softener guide uses B1 8, BD 60, B2 6, RR 6 and BF scaled to capacity (about 12 min on small units, 20 for 48k, 32 for 80k). Record what is in the valve before changing anything.
