Budget wall and under-cabinet hoods with an internal blower, push-button or soft-touch controls and LED lights, shipped with a 3-prong cord. Cosmo's own support hub lists the top issues: loud noise from shipping tape on the damper flaps, a motor that will not run because its plug came loose at the circuit board, and weak draw from undersized or long ducts. Most calls are install problems, not failed parts.

Safety first

  • Unplug the hood before removing filters, canopy or board cover.
  • Live-voltage checks at the outlet or board are caution: insulated probes, one hand.
  • Support the hood when removing a chimney cover or duct so it does not drop on the cooktop.

How it works

Line voltage comes in on a factory cord to a circuit board. The control panel (push buttons or soft-touch with LCD on the 63175S) talks to the board through a ribbon/wire harness; the board switches the fan speeds (3 speeds on the 63175S and 5MU30) and the LED lights.

The blower sits above the filters and pushes air up through a backdraft damper into the duct. If the damper flaps cannot open (tape, debris, a stuck flap, an exterior cap that does not open) the motor gets loud and airflow drops.

Cosmo states rated performance assumes the duct size in the manual and no more than about 12.5 ft of duct with one 90-degree elbow. Reducing duct size cuts suction and raises noise.

Ductless conversion uses carbon filters that cannot be washed (replace about every 4-6 months). On UC30 / UMC30 / QS / QB under-cabinet hoods the top vent must stay open into the cabinet, which needs a cut-out, because they have no front recirculation outlet.

Range hood fan runs only on high, runs slow, or a speed is missing

On simple switch hoods, a missing speed is usually the switch or a failed winding tap; on board-controlled hoods it can be a relay on the control. A fan that is slow on every speed points to grease-dragged bearings, a weak run capacitor on PSC motors, or airflow restriction. Check mechanical drag and airflow before electrical parts.

Cold air, odors or insects coming in through the range hood when it's off

Two dampers should block the duct when the fan is off: one at the hood and one in the wall or roof cap. Grease, bends, missing springs or screws in the path keep them open. Long duct runs and a house under negative pressure make it worse. Fix the dampers first; make-up air questions go to code and an HVAC or licensed contractor.
