Heat pump (hybrid) water heater: field service manual
Covers: Residential integrated heat pump water heaters with backup resistance elements
A heat pump water heater moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank using a compressor and refrigerant circuit, with electric elements as backup. They use much less energy than resistance tanks but need room air, airflow and a condensate drain. The sealed refrigerant system is blocked (EPA 608).
Safety first
- 240 V: breaker off and verify 0 V
- Sealed refrigerant system is blocked: EPA 608-certified technician only
- Never energize elements with the tank empty
How it works
A fan pulls room air across an evaporator; the compressor moves that heat into the water through a condenser wrapped on or in the tank.
Operating modes (Rheem example): Energy Saver (default), Heat Pump only, High Demand, Electric only (short-term), and Vacation (holds about 65°F).
In cold conditions or very high demand the unit falls back to the resistance elements, which raises energy use.
The unit cools and dehumidifies the space it is in.
