Water line materials and joints an appliance tech meets: PEX (crimp, clamp, expansion), copper, CPVC and push-to-connect
Most US homes have copper, CPVC or PEX supply lines. PEX is joined with crimp or clamp rings (most common, works with many tubing brands), cold-expansion rings (PEX-A only, needs an expansion tool, keeps flow high) or push-to-connect fittings. Push-to-connect fittings need no tool to join and also fit copper and CPVC, but cost the most per fitting and only seal if the pipe is cut square, deburred and inserted to the marked depth. Do not mix systems or adapters that are not rated for both materials.
Before you start
- Shut the water and relieve pressure first.
- Do not use a heat source or open flame on PEX or CPVC; sweating (soldering) copper next to plastic or in a cabinet is a fire risk and may be plumber-only work locally.
- Check local code: some jurisdictions limit who may alter supply piping and where push-fit fittings may be concealed or buried.
