Water Heaters

White particles in aerators: dip tube, scale or resin? (identify and replace the dip tube)

Three things commonly show up as white debris: calcium carbonate scale from the tank, plastic from a disintegrating polypropylene dip tube, and (in softened homes) resin beads. A cup of white vinegar sorts the first two: scale fizzes and dissolves, plastic does not. If it is the dip tube, the heater also tends to run out of hot water early; the fix is a new dip tube (PEX/cross-linked type) and a thorough flush.

Before you start

  • Electric: breaker OFF and verify 0 V before any work; gas: set the control to OFF/vacation per the label (no gas-side work)
  • Hot water in the tank can scald: let it cool or drain carefully
  • Do not restore electric power until the tank is full and air is purged from a hot tap
