Washer tearing, snagging or fraying clothes (holes after washing)
Most fabric damage is load-side, not machine-side: chlorine bleach poured straight onto fabric, open zippers and hooks, overloading and too-high spin on delicates. Once those are ruled out, look for a physical snag point: an escaped bra underwire or coin stuck between drum and tub, a broken drum paddle (lifter), a burr on the drum, a torn door boot lip, or a cracked or loose agitator/impeller on a top-loader.
Before you start
- Unplug the washer before reaching into the drum gaps or removing paddles or the agitator
- Broken underwires and drum burrs are sharp; wear gloves when feeling for snag points
