"Will your repair void my warranty?" What federal law says about independent repair and non-brand parts

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(c)), a warrantor generally may not make coverage depend on the customer using a specific brand of part or service, unless that part or service is provided free under the warranty or the FTC has granted a waiver. The FTC repeats this in its consumer guidance. That does not mean the maker must pay for damage your work or part caused, so the honest answer is: independent repair does not by itself void the warranty, but a covered failure is usually best sent to the maker's authorized service first, because they repair it for free.
