How to test a water inlet valve (single, dual and triple coil)

Inlet valves are solenoid valves. Each coil opens one water path. Test each coil for resistance; a coil can be fine yet the valve still fail mechanically (clogged screen or stuck plunger), so check flow and the screen too.

Before you start

  • Unplug the appliance or turn off the breaker before opening panels or disconnecting parts
  • Take a photo of the wiring before removing any wire
  • Resistance and continuity tests are done with power OFF and the part isolated
  • Live-voltage checks are a caution step: insulated probes, one hand, clips attached before power is restored, stay clear of terminals
  • Shut off the water supply before removing hoses
