Replace the HVAC condenser run capacitor (discharge first)
The run capacitor (single or dual HERM/FAN/C) is in the outdoor unit's electrical compartment. Kill power at the disconnect and breaker, verify dead, discharge the capacitor, then move the wires one at a time to a new capacitor with the same microfarad rating and an equal or higher voltage rating. This is electrical work only; anything involving the refrigerant circuit is blocked.
Before you start
- Shut off the outdoor disconnect AND the breaker, then verify 0 V at the contactor line side with a meter (not only a non-contact tester).
- A capacitor can hold a dangerous charge after power is off: discharge each section through a resistor tool and verify 0 V before touching terminals.
- Do not touch refrigerant lines, service valves or gauges: refrigerant work requires an EPA 608-certified technician (blocked).
- Turn the thermostat to off before restoring power.
