Replace and install garage door safety reversing sensors (photo eyes)

Safety reversing sensors are a required safety device: a beam across the opening near the floor that reverses the closing door. Replacement means matching the sensors to the opener brand, mounting both at the same height close to the floor (not more than 6 in above it), wiring them to the opener's sensor terminals and aligning them until both indicator lights are steady. Door springs and cables are BLOCKED and not part of this job.

Before you start

  • Unplug the opener before connecting sensor wires at the motor head.
  • Never bypass, jumper or mount the sensors high to get the door to close; they are required for the opener to be safe.
  • Springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension: do not loosen or adjust them (BLOCKED, refer to a trained door technician).
