Replace the dryer drum rollers and idler pulley (Whirlpool-built 29 in)

On the common Whirlpool-built 29 in dryer, two rear rollers and the idler pulley wear together. Replace both rollers, the idler and the belt as a set (kits exist for this platform). The drum must come out: open the top, remove the front panel, release the belt from the idler, lift the drum out, then swap the parts on the rear bulkhead.

Before you start

  • Unplug the dryer (gas models: unplug only, do not disconnect or move the gas line; if the unit must come far forward, refer the gas connection to a licensed installer).
  • The idler arm is spring loaded; release it slowly so it does not pinch fingers or snap into the belt switch.
  • Sheet-metal edges are sharp: wear gloves.
