Replace the dishwasher heating element (exposed loop type)

Exposed loop elements sit in the bottom of the tub and are held by plastic nuts or clips under the tub. The unit usually has to come out of the opening. Prove the supply water is hot and check the high-limit, then swap the element, tighten the plastic nuts only snug, leak-test with water in the tub, and run a cycle. Many Bosch and some other designs use an in-line heater pump instead: different procedure.

Before you start

  • Turn off the breaker and verify 0 V at the junction box before disconnecting wiring.
  • Close the hot-water stop and disconnect the supply into a pan before pulling the unit out.
  • Let the element cool if the unit just ran; it can be hot enough to burn.
