Reading any appliance code: user message vs information code vs fault, and when a reset destroys the evidence
Codes come in three kinds: status messages (delay, demo or cooling-off mode, download, child lock), user or installation codes (supply off, hoses swapped, door not latched, drain kinked) and component faults. Makers say many codes clear with a short power cut, but a reset can also wipe the only record of an intermittent fault; Samsung asks owners not to unplug a refrigerator to clear a code, and some boards forget their history on power loss. Record first, classify, then reset once and see if it returns.
Before you start
- Gas and sealed-refrigerant faults are blocked whatever the code says: diagnose, make safe, refer
- Power resets at a breaker on 240 V appliances: use the correct breaker and stand to the side of the panel
