Over-the-range microwave filters: grease filter cleaning, charcoal filter replacement and the Reset Filter light
OTR microwaves have metal grease filters underneath (washable) and, when set to recirculate, a charcoal filter behind the top grille (not washable). Whirlpool says to clean the grease filters about monthly and replace charcoal about every 6 months; GE gives 6 to 12 months for charcoal. GE's Reset Filter light is only a timer (about every 6 months): it does not sense a dirty filter and is cleared by holding Reset Filter for about 3 seconds.
Before you start
- Let the cooktop and microwave cool before pulling filters; grease filters can be hot right after cooking
- Turn the vent fan off before removing filters
- Do not run the vent without grease filters in place; grease reaches the blower and charcoal
