Home-visit safety checklist: smoke and CO alarms, GFCIs, dryer, water heater and appliance basics
A short list you can run in 20-30 minutes and leave in writing. USFA says to test smoke alarms monthly and replace each unit at 10 years; CPSC says to test CO alarms monthly and change replaceable batteries at least yearly; Leviton says to press TEST then RESET on every GFCI monthly. Add the dryer lint path, water heater T&P discharge, washer hoses, garage door reversal and appliance cords. You inspect and record; you do not repair gas or service panels as part of this list.
Before you start
- Warn occupants before testing alarms; they are loud
- If a CO alarm is sounding or anyone has headache, nausea or dizziness, get everyone out and call 911 or the gas utility from outside
- A GFCI that will not trip or reset is a hazard; tag it and recommend a licensed electrician if wiring is suspect
