Known issue: ASKO dishwasher power cord overheating (2019 recall)

In September 2019 ASKO recalled about 26,600 dishwashers sold through authorized ASKO dealers from October 2016 to July 2019 because the power cord can overheat, with 53 reports and no injuries. Covered units are listed by model and serial range on the CPSC page (for example D5426XLS and D5526XLFI families). The remedy was a free in-home repair.

Before you start

Dishwasher detergent dispenser won't open (detergent left in the cup)

First rule out blocking dishes, caked detergent and an unfinished cycle. Then test the dispenser actuator (a wax motor or bimetal/solenoid on most units) for an open circuit, and check whether the control sends 120 V to it during the wash. A cup that opens but leaves detergent behind is a wash problem, not a dispenser problem.

Grit is usually redeposited soil: a clogged filter, a drain that cannot clear (air gap, disposer, hose) or detergent that did not dissolve. Hard water causes white film rather than grit. Work from the filter outward, then check the drain path and the wash motor.

Dishwasher completely dead: no lights, no response (supply, door switch, thermal fuse)

Prove supply voltage at the junction box with a meter before blaming any part. Then check the door switch circuit and, on units that have one, the one-time thermal fuse near the control. Replace the control board only after these pass.
