Install an under-sink hot water recirculation pump (crossover valve system)
Crossover-type recirculation systems use the cold line as the return: a temperature-sensing valve under the farthest sink lets cooled water in the hot line flow into the cold line until hot water arrives. Depending on the kit, the pump mounts at the water heater (with the valve at the sink) or under the sink itself. Placement at the farthest fixture and correct hot/cold orientation are what make it work.
Before you start
- Close the hot and cold stops and open the faucet before removing anything: the hot line can scald.
- These systems are not anti-scald devices; any tempering needs a proper mixing valve.
- Plug the pump into a grounded outlet that can carry its load; a new outlet is for a qualified electrician where required.
