Install a through-the-wall air conditioner (sleeve and chassis)

A through-the-wall AC slides into a metal or plastic sleeve built into the wall. The sleeve must be the size and brand the chassis is made for, framed with a header if studs are cut, level side to side with the slight outward slope the instructions call for, sealed, and fitted with the rear grille. Electrical needs vary by unit (often a dedicated 115 V or 208/230 V circuit with a specific receptacle); new circuits go to a qualified electrician.

Before you start

  • Check the wall for wiring, plumbing and gas before cutting.
  • Cutting a stud in a bearing wall requires a proper header per the framing code; when in doubt, consult the AHJ or a contractor.
  • Match the unit's voltage and plug to the receptacle; a new circuit or receptacle is for a qualified electrician where required. Never use an extension cord or adapter.
  • Refrigerant circuit work is BLOCKED: the chassis is factory sealed; any refrigerant issue goes to an EPA 608-certified technician.
  • The chassis is heavy; lift with a helper.
