Install a point-of-use electric mini-tank water heater (under sink)
A mini-tank (roughly 2.5 to 7 gallons) mounts under or near a sink on the cold supply and heats a small volume for that fixture. Some models plug into a standard outlet and others are hardwired; the circuit, T&P valve discharge and drain pan follow the installation instructions and local code. The tank must be full and purged of air before power goes on.
Before you start
- Never connect power until the tank is full of water and air is purged: a dry element burns out immediately.
- The T&P relief valve must be installed and its discharge routed per the instructions and local code, away from electrical parts.
- Check the circuit: mini-tanks draw a large continuous load; a new circuit or hardwired connection is for a qualified electrician where required by local code.
- Hot water at the tap can scald; set the thermostat per the instructions and code.
