Glass-ceramic cooktop cracked or chipped (radiant or induction): shut it down and quote the top
A cracked glass-ceramic top is a stop-use condition: spills can reach live elements and wiring, and heating can make the crack run and the surface break. The repair is a replacement top (usually the glass assembly, sometimes with elements) by a technician. Do not seal or glue the crack. Scratches, by contrast, are cosmetic and do not affect operation.
Before you start
- Stop using the cooktop and turn off its breaker (or unplug it) as soon as a crack is found
- Do not wipe liquid into a crack or use the surface as a work area until it is replaced
- Do not fill the crack with epoxy or adhesive and return the cooktop to service
- On a range, the oven may share the breaker; keep the whole appliance off until it is made safe
