Gas cooktop burner flame yellow, lopsided or noisy (inspection and cleaning only)
A normal burner flame is mostly blue, with small yellow tips allowed (more common on propane). A single bad burner is almost always a cap that is not seated, clogged or wet ports, or a mismatched cap and head. All burners yellow or abnormal points to the gas side (wrong orifices for the gas type, a poor conversion, supply pressure), and that goes to a licensed gas technician. The tech's work here is visual inspection, cleaning, drying and reseating only.
Before you start
- If you smell gas: do not light anything or operate switches; shut the range off, ventilate, get people out and call the gas utility or 911 from outside
- Do not adjust air shutters, orifices, the pressure regulator or the gas valve, and do not convert the range between natural gas and LP; those are licensed gas-tech jobs
- Turn burners off and let the grates, caps and heads cool before handling them
- Keep water out of the burner base and the orifice; dry everything before relighting
