Freezer or beverage fridge left unused: vacation, seasonal shutdown and restart without mold, odor or child-entrapment risk

Short absences: leave the freezer running (Frigidaire: under three weeks). Long shutdown: empty it, unplug, clean and dry, and leave the door or lid propped slightly open so it does not grow mold and odor (Frigidaire and Midea). Defrost melt water is not reaching the drain pan, so it refreezes on the floor. The drain under the evaporator is clogged with debris or frozen shut, a drain heater/clip is missing or failed, or the liner is warped so water pools away from the hole.

Chest or upright freezer cabinet sides feel hot

On most chest freezers and many uprights the condenser tubing is bonded inside the outer walls, so warm sides are normal and keep the cabinet from sweating. It only matters if the warmth is extreme with poor cooling, or the unit runs constantly; then check clearance, ambient temperature, the door seal and any external condenser.
