Freezer or refrigerator stinks after food spoiled (outage, unplugged unit): cleanup that works and when it doesn't
University extension guidance (Clemson HGIC, Texas A&M AgriLife) gives one sequence: throw out the food, wash the cabinet with a baking soda or vinegar solution, dry, and if the smell stays, unplug and leave activated charcoal inside for several days, replacing it as needed. If the odor has soaked into the foam insulation, sometimes nothing removes it, and the cabinet may have to be replaced. Fix why the food spoiled before the customer restocks.
Before you start
- Unplug before washing the inside.
- Do not taste or 'check' thawed food; when in doubt it goes in the trash (see freezer-power-outage-recovery-food-safety).
- Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia products; use one cleaner at a time and rinse between them.
- Rotting meat juices can carry pathogens; gloves on, and bag the waste right away.
