New or relocated freezer: first start checklist (stand time, clearances, leveling, cool-down before loading)

Most 'new freezer' complaints are setup issues: unit loaded before it cooled down, too much unfrozen food at once, no breathing room, door not self-closing because the cabinet is not tilted back, or plugged into a GFCI or switched outlet. Manufacturer numbers differ by model, so read the label and manual, but typical figures are: let it stand upright before plugging in (Midea: 30 minutes for a unit that stayed upright), run it empty 2 to 4 hours before loading (Frigidaire: 4 hours; Midea: 2 to 3 hours, more than 4 in summer), freeze no more than about 3 lb of fresh food per cubic foot at a time (Frigidaire). Units that were laid down need a longer wait; see freezer-not-cold-after-move-oil-settling.

Before you start

  • Two people for uprights; keep the unit upright in transport (Midea limits tilt to 45 degrees while moving).
  • Dedicated, grounded 3-prong outlet; no extension cords or adapters (Frigidaire and Midea).
  • Frigidaire's freezer manual says GFCI-protected receptacles are not recommended, and warns against outlets controlled by a wall switch. Where code requires GFCI (garages, basements), explain the nuisance-trip risk to the customer; see component-gfci-afci-nuisance-trips.
  • Remove shipping spacers and plastic; keep packaging away from children.
