Flooded basement or standing water around an appliance: electrical safety before you step in
Standing water plus energized equipment can kill. Do not enter standing water to reach equipment or the panel; get the power shut off from a dry location, or by the utility or an electrician. Appliances and electrical equipment that got wet must be completely dry and inspected by a qualified electrician before power is restored. Flooded gas controls go to a licensed gas technician. Expect that many submerged devices will be replaced rather than dried and reused; the electrician decides which.
Before you start
- Never switch power on or off, or use an electric tool, while standing in water
- Do not enter standing water to reach a panel or disconnect; call the utility or an electrician
- Gas appliances that were flooded must have their gas controls checked or replaced by a licensed gas technician before use
- Do not run a generator inside the house, basement or garage
