Field pattern: softener 'stopped working' with a full salt tank (salt bridge before the control valve)
A hardened crust of salt can span the brine tank above the water, so the tank looks full while no brine is made and the resin never regenerates. The wrong turn is replacing the control valve, the resin or the whole softener before pushing a broom handle down through the salt.
Before you start
- Unplug the softener or set it to bypass before working in the brine tank
- Use a blunt, non-metal tool; sharp or metal tools can crack the tank or brine well
- Do not climb on or lean heavily on the brine tank
