Water spurts from the dishwasher air gap at the sink (blocked disposal inlet, knockout plug, hose)

The air gap is doing its job: when the path from the air gap to the disposal or sink tailpiece is blocked, the water exits at the sink instead of flowing back into the dishwasher. The blockage is almost always downstream: a knockout plug never removed from a new disposal's dishwasher inlet, food packed in the disposal inlet or the hose, a kinked or collapsed hose, or debris inside the air gap itself.

Before you start

  • Turn off and unplug the disposal (or switch off its breaker) before reaching into it or working on its inlet
  • Never put a hand in the disposal; retrieve the knockout plug with pliers or tongs
  • Use hose clamps rated for the job; overtightening can crush the hose nipple

Disposal sink-top air switch (push button) not working

An air switch sends a puff of air down a small tube to a power module under the sink, which toggles the outlet the disposal plugs into. Check the disposal itself first, then the tube, the button and the module. Some InSinkErator single-outlet SinkTop Switch modules (2005-2017) were recalled for water entry and overheating.

Installing a sink-top air switch for a garbage disposal (button, air tube and power module)

An air switch uses a push button on the sink deck or counter that sends a puff of air down a plastic tube to a power module under the sink. The disposal plugs into the module; each press toggles it on or off. Nothing electrical is on the counter. The module plugs into a grounded 120 V outlet that is always on (not switched). The button fits a standard sink hole or a 1-1/4 in hole drilled in the counter. Dual-outlet modules (used when an instant hot water tank shares the sink) have their own rules for which outlet is switched; read the kit sheet.

Garbage disposal trips the GFCI (not the breaker)

A GFCI trips on current leaking to ground, not on overload. A wet or failing disposal (bottom leak into the motor, damaged cord, bad splice) is the most likely cause; motor leakage on older units and a shared circuit with the dishwasher can add up. Diagnose the leak; never solve it by removing GFCI protection where the local code requires it.
