Compression fittings on appliance water lines (ice maker, dishwasher, faucet stops): no tape, hand-tight plus a fraction of a turn
A compression joint seals by squeezing a brass or plastic ferrule (sleeve) between the nut and the fitting body onto the tube. The threads only pull it together, so tape or dope on the threads is not needed and can make the joint leak. Tighten hand-tight, then the extra turn the fitting maker gives (commonly a quarter to a half turn), test, and only nudge further if it drips. Over-tightening crushes the tube or ferrule and is the most common cause of leaks.
Before you start
- Shut the water at the stop or main and open a downstream outlet to relieve pressure before loosening a nut.
- Unplug the refrigerator or dishwasher before working behind or under it.
