Stop: this involves gas or the sealed refrigerant system.

OnCall Tech only describes the symptom. Gas work needs a licensed gas technician, and refrigerant work requires EPA Section 608 certification. If you smell gas: shut off the supply if it is safe, do not switch anything on or off, ventilate, leave the building and call the gas utility.

OnCall Tech is a reference tool for trained technicians and can make mistakes. Always disconnect power and confirm with the manufacturer's documentation before you work.

Heat pump stuck in defrost or defrosting too long

Normal defrost lasts a few minutes, with the outdoor fan off, steam rising and aux heat on. A unit that stays in defrost points to a defrost thermostat/sensor that never opens, a board fault, or a reversing valve that doesn't shift back. Separate normal behaviour from a real fault first.

PTAC not heating (electric heat or heat pump)

PTACs heat with electric strip heat, a heat pump, or both. Heat pump models switch to strip heat in cold weather. Check settings, then the heater element and its limits, then the reversing valve.

Heat pump blows cold in heat mode (or heats in cool mode)

The reversing valve is in the wrong position. Check the thermostat O/B setting first, then 24 V at the solenoid coil, then the coil itself. A valve that won't shift with a good energized coil is sealed-system work.
