Submersible well pumps, 2-wire vs 3-wire and control boxes: field service manual

Single-phase 4 in submersible well pumps on a pressure switch and captive-air tank: 2-wire motors (start parts inside the motor, up to 1.5 HP) and 3-wire motors with an above-ground control box (e.g. Franklin QD 1/3-1 HP, CRC, Standard and Deluxe boxes). Constant-pressure drives are covered in their own manual.

Constant-pressure (variable-speed) well systems: field service manual

Residential variable-frequency or variable-speed drives that run a submersible (or above-ground) pump to hold a pressure setpoint, with a pressure transducer or sensor and a small diaphragm tank. Fault codes listed here are Franklin SubDrive/MonoDrive Connect; other brands use their own codes.

Well pump hums, won't start or trips overload: control box test (3-wire)

On a 3-wire submersible, the start capacitor and relay in the control box are the most common surface failures and can be tested with a meter. First confirm power through the pressure switch, then test the box. If the box is good or the system is 2-wire, the problem is down the well and goes to a well contractor.

Constant-pressure well drive shows a fault or pressure surges

Read the code first; it tells you whether the problem is supply power, settings, the transducer or the pump/motor. Surging at low flow is almost always tank precharge. Use the drive maker's code list; the examples here are Franklin SubDrive/MonoDrive Connect.
